The Zygoma Implant

Abstract
The concept of Zygoma implants was developed by P-I Brånemark to solve problems of anchorage in the posterior region of the maxilla in patients with major resorption and Type IV quality of bone. With an effective use of existing dense bone even at another level than the maxilla, it becomes possible to insert implants supporting prosthetic teeth in severely resorbed jawbones without the need for bone grafting or sinus lifting.

This course gave the guidelines for patient selection, treatment planning, and a demonstration of the surgical and prosthetic procedures with its use.

Chantal Malevez, MD, DDS, Brussels, Belgium

Dr. Malevez received her MD degree from the Catholic University of Leuven and her DDS degree from the Free University of Brussels, where she also received her specialty training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Malevez is a Professor on the Faculty of Medicine and President of the Postgraduate Education of Implantology at the Free University of Brussels. She is Clinical Chief of the Departments of Maxillofacial Surgery at Brussels Children's Hospital and the Academic Hospital Erasme, and a member of the cleft palate team at Children's Hospital. Dr. Malevez is a member of the European Association for Osseointegration, the Academy of Osseointegration, the EACMFS, and the Royal Belgian Society of Maxillofacial Surgery. She has lectured and published extensively in the fields of maxillofacial surgery and oral rehabilitation utilizing dental implants

Stephen M. Parel, DDS, Dallas, Texas

Dr. Parel received his DDS from Medical College of Virginia, completed his residency in Prosthodontics at Wadsworth VA Hospital in Los Angeles, and received his training in Maxillofacial Prosthetics at M.D. Anderson Hospital & Tumor Institute in Houston, Texas. Dr. Parel is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics, and past president of both the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics and the Academy of Osseointegration. His contributions to the literature include over 45 scientific articles and several textbooks.

Dr. Parel is currently Professor and Director of the Division of Maxillofacial Prosthetics, Baylor College of Dentistry, Dallas, Texas.
